Reusable Data Logic

Reusable data logic is code, models, or components that encapsulate common transformations or business rules and can be applied across multiple analyses and use cases.

Reusable data logic avoids duplication. Instead of every analyst writing custom SQL to filter test accounts, a reusable component does it once. Instead of each dashboard defining revenue differently, a single revenue metric is reused. Reusable logic can be: SQL views (database-level reuse), dbt models (transformation-level reuse), or UDF functions (code-level reuse). The key is that logic is defined once, versioned once, tested once, and used everywhere.

Reusable logic emerged from the chaos of every analyst implementing business rules independently. Revenue was calculated 10 different ways, each slightly wrong or incomplete.
